Buildings lie in ruins in Mandalay region, in central Myanmar, following the devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake.

A powerful earthquake registering 7.2 on the Richter scale has struck Myanmar, claiming the lives of more than 1,600 people and injuring thousands. The catastrophic event, which occurred in the early hours, has resulted in extensive damage to infrastructure and communities, overwhelming local emergency services.

UN officials have confirmed that the disaster has prompted a large-scale international aid operation. Rescue teams—comprising UN personnel, humanitarian organizations, and international partners—are working under extremely hazardous conditions to search for survivors and provide critical support to those affected.

“In the wake of this devastating event, our deepest condolences go out to the families of the victims,” stated UN Secretary-General António Guterres. “We remain fully committed to deploying all necessary resources to support rescue efforts and provide relief to those displaced by this catastrophe.”

The United Nations has mobilized an emergency response that includes deploying medical teams, distributing food supplies, and establishing temporary shelters in the hardest-hit areas. Despite these urgent efforts, local authorities warn that the situation remains critical as rescue operations continue and the full extent of the damage is still being assessed.

International partners have pledged additional support, sending specialized rescue equipment and personnel to bolster the recovery process. This collective effort underscores a global commitment to alleviate suffering and rebuild the affected communities.
